Another year has come and gone and spring is right around the corner. It’s at this time of the year that we gather a list of changes and additions that we’ve seen in Long Island’s retail landscape over the past year.
Many well-known retailers have recently opened or plan to open new locations across Long Island this year breathing new life into the retail market. These openings are significant as they speak to our growing economy. Here’s a look at Long Island’s most notable new retail roundup.
New and Recent Retail Store Openings on Long Island
24 Hour Fitness
The California-based fitness chain opened a new center in Valley Stream in December 2016. This health center claims to feel more like a community and less like your typical gym.
Aldi
The discount grocer, owned by the same company as Trader Joe’s, opened its sixth Long Island store in Selden in September 2016.
Artizia
Women’s fashion boutique Aritzia, which started in Vancouver in 1984, opened a Roosevelt Field Mall, Garden City location in June 2016.
Baldinini
Italian shoemaker Baldinini opened its first New York flagship store at Roosevelt Field Mall, Garden City in November 2016. There are currently 100 Baldinini stores worldwide.
Best Market
A new Best Market supermarket opened in a former Waldbaum’s on Sunrise Highway in Oakdale in November 2016, joining the other Best Markets that replaced former Waldbaum’s throughout 2016.
Chanel
A retail store from the famous French fashion line, Chanel, opened in December 2016 at Roosevelt Field Mall, Garden City.
Chick-fil-A
Georgia-based chicken fast-food chain Chick-fil-A, which has one Long Island location open already, added two more in November 2016 – locations included Commack and Hicksville.
Dick’s Sporting Goods
Dick’s Sporting Goods opened a new store in Valley Stream at Green Acres Commons in July 2016.
Field & Stream
Outdoor retailer Field & Stream opened its first Long Island store in September 2016 in Huntington, next to a newly renovated and revamped Dick’s Sporting Goods.
Hackett London
British menswear store Hackett London opened its first U.S. location at Roosevelt Field Mall, Garden City in October 2016.
Hmart
Hmart, an Asian-American supermarket chain, opened a location in a former Waldbaum’s in October 2016. This Jericho location makes three total on Long Island with two others in Williston Park and Great Neck.
J. Jill
New Hampshire-based J. Jill, a national retailer of women’s clothing, accessories and footwear, opened at Roosevelt Field Mall, Garden City in March 2016.
Jersey Mike’s
New Jersey-based sub shop Jersey Mike’s opened its first Long Island location on Jericho Turnpike in Commack in October 2016, with more locations planned for Long Island.
Karen Millen
London-based fashion house Karen Millen opened a store at the Tanger Outlets in Riverhead in June 2016. The boutique’s flagship opened in Manhattan in 2008.
Kneipp
German-based retailer, specializing in body care and bath products, opened its first U.S. location at Roosevelt Field Mall, Garden City in November 2016.
L.L. Bean
The Maine-based retailer opened a kiosk in October 2016 at Smith Haven Mall, Lake Grove, and will be opening the company’s first full-service store on Long Island at that same property this spring.
Neiman Marcus
The high-end department store opened its first Long Island location at Roosevelt Field Mall, Garden City in February 2016.
Oakley
California-based company, mostly known for its sunglasses but also sells apparel, accessories and electronics, opened a store at Roosevelt Field Mall, Garden City in May 2016.
Planet Fitness
Opening its largest location, Planet Fitness opened its doors to its Hauppauge location in December 2016.
Pure Hockey
Massachusetts-based Pure Hockey opened a store in Smithtown in June 2016. The hockey retailer has a second location on Long Island in Garden City, and three others across New York State.
Pure Mammography
Medical Arts Radiology opened a mammography-screening center at Smith Haven Mall, Lake Grove in February 2017.
Shake Shack
With two relatively new Long Island locations, Garden City and New Hyde Park, Shake Shack just added another location to their list – Welcome, Lake Grove! Lake Grove will be the first Suffolk County location.
ShopRite
A new ShopRite location opened in November 2016 on Sunrise Highway in Massapequa. This location replaces a former Waldbaum’s supermarket.
Tesla
Tesla opened what it calls a “gallery” in February 2017 at the Walt Whitman Shops mall in Melville. This site allows shoppers to check out the vehicles on site. It’s the second site of its kind on Long Island with the other in Manhasset.
