Meet Rob Tan

Where did you grow up?
I grew up in Queens and on Long Island; Specifically, East Meadow aka the “Nassau
Hub.”

Where did you go to college? What did you major in?
I attended Adelphi University and majored in nursing. Also, I am currently enrolled at Kaplan University and am majoring in Accounting. We know that you have a diverse and interesting career history.

Name two past career experiences that you’ve enjoyed most.
I definitely have had interesting and diverse career choices. The two experiences that I’ve enjoyed the most were my role as a Corporate Paralegal with a focus on due diligence, and my career as a Patient Care Assistant at Nassau County Medical Center. Although on opposite sides of the spectrum, they were both very interesting as each day was very different from the last.
Name two past career experiences that you found to be the most challenging.
To be blunt, dealing with someone on their death bed was by far the most challenging career experience that I’ve endured. Another interesting and challenging experience
was working on an international merger with domestic and foreign corporations. Bothexperiences required a lot of patience and resilience.
How did your career path lead you to work for AIP?
I was searching for a career opportunity that would allow me the time to further my studies and American Investment Properties did just that while enabling me to put my
knowledge of database to use.

What is your current role at American Investment Properties?
I am currently the Manager of Property Research and Database, I also assist with all IT situations and endeavors.
In what ways has having a background in database management and research been beneficial to the work you are currently doing at AIP?
Being fluent in database systems, and having a solid understanding search fields and how they work, directly relates to my current position at AIP. I am able to apply my previous knowledge and organize our database in an efficient and productive way.
Name two of your favorite things about working for American Investment Properties.
I am truly enjoying the people I work with. Although our growing team is relatively small, we have greatly talented individuals here that each bring a different skill set to the table. I also really admire the general positive attitude of the office. It makes coming to work a pleasant experience, and something that I even look forward to.

Name one thing you would change about American Investment Properties.
Coming from working in New York City to working on Long Island, the only thing I would change is the lack of quality lunch options. Honestly speaking, I just truly miss Chop’t…so much that I’ve even found myself on the Chop’t Franchising page on their website!
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
In five years, I hope to be working for a leading New York accounting firm. I also hope to continue in helping to grow Long Island based companies with a focus in company finances.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
In ten years, I hope to be a general partner in a leading New York accounting firm. In addition, I would like to continue and further my interest in Long Island companies with the possibility of becoming Chief Financial Officer for one or more of them.

Last question: tell us the three things you would take with you to a deserted island.
